One Week One Book : High Performance Habits

This week we are covering a masterpiece from one of my idols ; Brendon Burchard. He is the world’s leading high performance coach and one of the most watched, quoted, and followed personal development trainers in history. The book “High Performance Habits” was published in 2017 . Three my take away from the book;

Generate Energy

Raise necessity

Increase productivity

Lets go slightly deeper in each idea…

Generate Energy

This is from habit No.2. No dispute that energy is so critical in achieving our big dreams. How you define energy? Sometimes we say that  a person has no energy; judging at him / her of looking so lethargic with  no drive. To me, energy is a state of excitement and ready to take on whatever I want to do. Energy covers mental, emotional, and physical. Brandon shares three methods under this habit in order to generate energy. First he called it Release Tension, Set Intention”. I love this method. It is about how to  manage our transitions ; how you move from one activity to another activity. An example a transition, a time from attending a meeting to a discussion with your boss. Many of us just continue with same energy level or pace from one activity to another. That is why we easily tired or just plain unexcited throughout the day. This is how this technique works;

Before moving on to your next activity;

  1. Close your eyes for one to minutes.
  2. Say the word “release” in your mind repeatedly. This act actually helping you to let go of any unwanted feeling of the current moment.
  3. Set the intention ; the is the powerful one. Tell yourself ; the kind of mood you want to bring to the next activity. Pre play on how  you want to behave. How you want to enjoy and be excellence at about what you want to do next. For example this morning, right after 30 minutes of writing this blog, me and family will be having a photo shoot session. Before going, I practice this little trick; image how and want to make this activity fun for the family. Imagine what kind of mood I want to bring…after the session all the family members are very happy and we had a great family outing.

Second is “bring the joy”. It is about having positive emotion. Positive emotion actually can affect our level of success. Researches have proven than those with optimism and positive emotion do far better in life than those who without.

There are so much of great ideas in this great book. I cannot cover them all here. I strongly recommend you read this entire book. How to bring joy and positive emotion into our daily life? From this book, I can summarize the key strategies (make these your daily rituals) are that set the positive emotion in advance, positive anticipation on result from every undertaking, preparation for difficult situation, and being grateful. Brandon suggests that to make these joys come to our life, we must create some triggers ( reminders ). These reminders help us  certain acts so that the positive  emotions will come to us instead of we wait for them to come to us. He shared so many great triggers and one I love is Door frame trigger.” “Every time I walk through a doorway, I say to myself, “I will find the good in this room. I’m entering this space a happy man ready to serve.”

This practice helps him to be fully present , to look good in others and prepare to help others. Perhaps we also can copy this trigger.

Raise Necessity

This is habit No 3. It is not that simple and this chapter is about  how to develop that high performance habits. This is the chapter that I read slowly in order to grasp the whole idea. The key message I got is that the necessity or “the must” is key element  in achieving great result. Necessity comprises of four elements / factors ;  identity, obsession, duty, and urgency. So, how can I raise my necessity so that I took can have those great performance habits?. I  will pick identity and obsession as find ways how apply in my life. Identity is about standard of excellence that you set for yourself. I remember hearing from one great man, he said “ my identity is that I am a person that is never give up”.  What is your identity? A banker? A life success coach? So, in every situation, ask yourself on how being a person of that identity behave or act ? To me I find it very powerful in dealing with tough situation.

Obsession…..some people may not like the word, but I strongly agree that through obsession you can achieve greatness. Passion is not enough, you must be obsess!  So, what are you obsess about now? Obsession make times fly and sometimes people say you are crazy because of this obsession. it is the secret habit of high performers.

Increase Productivity

I am a big fan of productivity. Every time there is a chapter about productivity, I will give my great attention. This book, the author spend a great amount of time sharing one of his productivity strategies. A strategy that helps him become a bestseller author.
