The Best Way to Make Gratitude a Habit

I spent 10 minutes every morning in gratitude – choosing ten things to be grateful for that did not cost money” ~ Lisa Nichols, author of Abundance Now

The benefits of gratitude are enormous. Tons of scientific studies had been revealed and you know it too. Almost of all of the successful we know of also attribute being grateful is always one of their key values. Daniel G. Amen, in his recent book “ Feel Better Fast and Make It Last, said that happiness is the benefit of gratitude which ultimately affect our personality, physical, emotional, career and social health. The question is how do we make this gratitude part of our daily habit? Make so automatic just like brushing teeth..

Perhaps daily journaling on gratitude will help you creating a grateful mindset. Follows this steps to make daily journaling a habit; 1.Have a Journal, 2.Allocate Time and 3.Track.

1.Have a journal.

Of course the obvious one. It can be a blank book or any digital format. There are so many options available for you. Choose the one that easy to use and implement. I prefer old style plain blank note book. Journaling is a habit of super achievers. Brendon Burchard, the top 100 most-followed public figure on facebook and also the author of high performance habits, recommends his clients to have a “Clarity Chart” ; one-page journal.

What to write in this journal? Start with these 5 questions daily…

What am I grateful for today?

What great thing happened to me yesterday?

One thing that I am looking forward today?

One person that  I will show appreciation today… saying thank you or giving compliment?

What one small act of kindness that I will do today?

2. Allocate Time

This is crucial. To make a task stick, you must do it daily, same time and same duration. For a start, right before going to sleep. Put 7 minutes timer and start answering the above question.

If you get excited, do not overdo…when time is up…stop. Do it again tomorrow. Repeat the process. Make the journal and pen ready …and easy to reach. Reward yourself with a big smile every time you complete this task.

3.Track

I use an app called HabitBull to keep track of my daily habits. As wise man said “ things get measure, get done”. Use whatever tools that suit you. You need to chart out the score ; strike or tick or cross when this habit is done. Track the progress. Keep doing.

If fail to do it today, try it again tomorrow. Never give up and most important, do not be so harsh on yourself you missed the target. Keep doing and that is the secret.
